Kerala Backwaters: A 4-Day Houseboat Itinerary

Kerala's backwaters are one of the few Indian trips where doing less is the whole point — a houseboat itinerary works best with long, unhurried stretches on the water rather than a checklist of stops.

Day 1: Fly into Kochi, and spend the afternoon in Fort Kochi — Chinese fishing nets, old warehouses turned into cafés, and a slower introduction to the state before the backwaters.

Day 2: Drive to Alleppey and board your houseboat by early afternoon. Most itineraries cruise through the afternoon, moor for the night on a quieter stretch of water, and serve a home-style Kerala dinner on board.

Day 3: Wake up on the water, cruise on to Kumarakom, and disembark by early evening for a night on land — a good point to break up multiple nights on a boat if that's not your thing.

Day 4: A relaxed morning in Kumarakom (the bird sanctuary, if you're early) before heading back to Kochi for your flight out.
